There are two times of the day, regardless of the season, when the sun pours warm yellow light overhead, creating a dream-like setting where your proposal can take place through a breathtaking backdrop.

Sunset

A sunset proposal gives you the space to create a full experience of your evening with a photoshoot, sunset walk, and late evening dinner. The atmosphere is shaped by the dimming light as the sun sets over the horizon, layering the setting with depth and creating an amazing story for you both to tell for years to come.

Some of the best locations to propose throughout Newport (we’ve detailed a few of our couples’ favorites below) are wide open spaces that work in favor of the sunset. Additionally, a sunset proposal in Newport can easily be accomplished without a cover story. If you’re concerned that your soon-to-be fiancé might have an idea of what’s happening, it would be easy enough to plan a date night without them knowing what’s to come.

Just Before Sunset

Depending on the time of year you plan on proposing, it may be difficult to get the sunset to line up exactly with your proposal. Planning your RI proposal just before sunset can still produce beautiful images filled with unforgettable memories. However, you may have to be more flexible on the location in Newport you choose to propose. For example, a local park will offer a fair amount of backlight to fill your images with glowing natural light, versus a wide open space that can be a bit more harsh when it comes to lighting.

Proposing on a weeknight allows you more flexibility when booking your photographer, who will be more readily available during the week than on a weekend. But planning a weeknight proposal in Newport also gives you time unencumbered by schedules and advanced weekend plans.

How Will We Coordinate The Proposal and Photography?

Once you’ve booked Sara Zarrella Photography for your surprise proposal in Newport, we’ll finalize the details of your date, time, and location.

On the day of the proposal, we will arrive to the pre-selected location in advance in order to scout the space and discreetly tuck ourselves out of sight.

If any details change about the location upon our arrival, closures, or abnormal crowd levels, etc, we will quickly change course and communicate with you through text.

You’ll also need to let us know what you are both wearing and if you plan on dropping down on one knee or have another unique proposal idea in mind. We’ll step back at first, allowing you to direct the moment naturally. When you’ve secured your yes, we’ll step forward and continue your photography experience. 

What Should We Wear?

Planning a true surprise proposal, where your partner is unsuspecting, can be difficult if you are attempting to notify them of attire. Which is why we love the idea of sunset proposals with dinner plans. That way, you can get ‘dressed up’ for dinner without your partner suspecting anything. We recommend wearing what you’re comfortable in and what feels most like you.

Above all, what you put on your feet is probably the most important detail. Many of the recommended proposal locations we’ve detailed below are outdoors. If at all possible, avoid heels or wedges. We always recommend selecting a comfortable, flat shoe that will allow you to enjoy the walk or exploration of the area you’ve selected for the proposal.

We’re Already Engaged, Should We Re-create the Proposal for a Photoshoot?

If you’re already engaged, that would be an engagement photoshoot, and yes, you can absolutely still enjoy a photoshoot together! Engagement photos allow you both to be involved throughout the planning process with your Rhode Island photographer, including selecting a location and choosing attire. If you wanted to recreate your proposal as part of the fun, we can revisit the location where you asked and incorporate it into the photoshoot.

Castle Hill – Newport

Castle Hill is a stunning hotel and wedding venue stretched along the jagged coastline of Newport. It provides private beach access to the sandy shores and is also known for its lighthouse, which is an active lighthouse located at the end of Ocean Drive. However, if you plan on proposing in this area, you will either need to have booked a hotel stay or a dinner reservation (a hotel stay is not required to dine at their on-site restaurant). 

The grounds and surrounding views from Castle Hill are idyllic and awe-inspiring, with unobstructed views of the ocean that stretch out over the horizon. The location is romantic and embodies coastal Newport, making it an ideal location to propose before enjoying your stay at the hotel or dining on their contemporary New England cuisine.

Ideally situated behind the famed Gilded Age mansions in Newport, RI, you’ll find Cliff Walk. Cliff Walk is a stretch of 3.5 miles that winds through Newport, providing views of the mansions from one side of the path, and a panorama of the jagged coastline from the other side.

It’s an enchanting space where a dash of old-world charm allows those visiting Cliff Walk to become lost in its history while soaking up the awe-inspiring views from the other side of the path. Proposing at Cliff Walk is ideal if you are searching for a more easily accessible, public space in Newport that provides views of the water with the facades of the historic summer homes the area is known for.

Though it’s a resort and wedding venue, the area surrounding Newport Harbor Island is open to the public, allowing you to explore the grounds as part of your planned surprise proposal. The island of Newport Harbor is easily walkable and features a stone lighthouse on the lawn.

Views from within this space include a backdrop of the Newport Bridge, the shoreline, and sailboats bobbing in and out of the harbor. If you’d like your proposal to include a dinner reservation, Newport Harbor Island features several on-site restaurants where you can enjoy dinner together, with views of the ocean, after your proposal.

Brenton Point State Park is a wide open, vast expanse of greenery that hugs the coast, for views of the glittering waters of the Atlantic that stretch on for miles.

It’s a place where slow afternoon picnics unfold against the backdrop of kites flying loftily in the air. Though it is a public space, there are plenty of locations away from parkgoers where you can propose in a way that feels secluded from onlookers.

Forty Steps – Newport

Every corner of Newport holds a story, adding charm to the already renowned coastal town’s sentiment. Forty Steps in Newport is a small key to the past. Constructed in the 1840s, the granite steps are an access point to Cliff Walk. The steps were originally constructed as a way to provide private access to the beach by local homeowners and were later replaced with iron, destroyed by a hurricane, and rebuilt in the 1990s.

Adding to the steps’ storied history, it is widely believed that they once served as the secret meeting place for the servants who worked in the mansion homes of the Gilded Age. As with every corner of Newport, the steps are a work of art, winding down from the cliffside to the oceanfront with balustrades composed of rock. Before reaching the shore, the steps feature a flat landing, where you can plan a proposal with views of the Atlantic Ocean in the backdrop.

Roger Williams Park – Providence

If you’re searching for proposal locations outside of Newport, Roger Williams Park is picturesque any time of the year. When the seasons click, the beauty of the park is seen through lush foliage, in a landscape that dances with vibrancy. Though the park is a free public space, the setting is vast, allowing you to select a location for your proposal that feels private and tucked away. Roger Williams Park features a number of spaces to curate the backdrop for your proposal, including a gazebo, paddle boats, carousel, or botanical gardens, adding a layer of fun and whimsy to your engagement.

Gerald’s Farm

If you need a very private location where you can propose, we have one. But it’ll be up to you to come up with an amazing cover story for why you’re visiting the area, which is secluded and encompasses 32 acres. Located just 15 minutes over the Newport Bridge, the space is available through private access only. But the tucked away location is an oasis with lush landscape full of greenery.

If you can’t propose at or just before sunset, Gerald’s Farm is an amazing location any time of the day. The light is never ending and shapes the landscape.

In the spring and summer, it comes to life with florals and fresh blooms; fall brings about the classic red-washed orange tones of New England, and winter creates a magical escape from the world. We typically use this location for engagement photos (after a proposal has already occurred), but if you need a secluded location where you can propose in Rhode Island, we can make the space available to you through one of our photography packages.
